Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Nook Works (“we”) handles information in the iOS app “Gotochi Kotodama” (the “App”). This English version is provided for convenience; if it differs from the Japanese version, the Japanese version prevails.
Summary
- To translate, the App sends the phrase you enter and the target prefectures to our translation server. The server does not store your phrases or the results.
- Translations use the DeepL API (English ↔ Japanese) and the OpenAI API (dialect translation and readings).
- The App is free and shows ads through Google AdMob. It does not ask for tracking permission (ATT).
- To improve the App, it sends which screens are shown and which actions are taken to Firebase Analytics. It never sends the phrases you enter.
- No account is needed. We never ask for your name or email address.
1. Information stored on your device
The App stores the following on your device only:
- Settings (theme color, chosen target prefecture)
- Your ticket count and when the next ticket started refilling
- Values used to decide how often review requests and ads are shown
This information never leaves your device and we cannot see it. The App does not keep a history of your phrases or results.
2. Information sent for translation
When you translate a phrase, and when the home screen shows a short line in dialect, the App sends the following to our translation server, which runs on Cloud Functions for Firebase provided by Google LLC.
| What is sent | The phrase you entered, the target prefectures, and the App's display language (Japanese or English) |
|---|---|
| When | When you tap “Translate”, and when the home screen is shown (no phrase is sent for the home screen line) |
| Storage | Our translation server does not store your phrases or the results, and does not write your phrases to its error logs |
Translation services we use
- DeepL SE (DeepL API): translation between English and standard Japanese
- OpenAI (OpenAI API): translation from standard Japanese into regional dialects, romaji readings, and the home screen line
These providers may keep the content they receive for a limited time under their own terms, for example to monitor abuse. Please do not enter personal information such as names, addresses or phone numbers, or anything you want to keep private.
Verifying the genuine app
To prevent abuse of the translation server, we use Firebase App Check (including Apple's App Attest) to confirm that requests come from the genuine App. This sends information showing that the device and app are genuine to Apple and Google, but nothing that identifies you personally.
3. Advertising
To keep the App free, it shows the following ads through Google AdMob, provided by Google LLC:
- Full-screen ads shown occasionally, for example before a translation result appears
- Video ads you choose to watch when you are out of tickets (watch to the end to get one ticket)
To deliver ads, measure them and prevent fraud, Google collects information such as your device model, OS version and language, IP address, and how ads are shown and interacted with in the App.
The App does not request permission to track you across apps and websites (App Tracking Transparency), so the advertising identifier (IDFA) is not collected through the App. See how Google uses information from ads for details.
4. Usage analytics
To improve the App, we use Firebase Analytics, provided by Google LLC.
Sent by the App
- Names of the screens shown
- The prefectures that translations went to (not the phrases themselves)
- Which settings items were tapped, and the theme color chosen
Collected automatically by Firebase Analytics
- An app instance ID (a random identifier per device, not linked to your name or email address)
- Device model, OS version and language
- Country or region estimated from your IP address (no address or precise location)
- App version, number of launches and times of use
We use this to find and fix bugs and to understand which features and prefectures are popular. We do not use it to identify individuals. Data is deleted after the retention period set in Firebase.
5. Remote settings
The App fetches settings, such as how often ads appear and the URLs of pages like this one, from Firebase Remote Config, provided by Google LLC. A random per-device identifier is sent, but nothing you have entered.
6. Contacting us
If you contact us through the form in the App's settings or by email, we use what you send (including your email address) only to reply and to improve the App.
7. Service providers and processing outside Japan
The information in sections 2 to 5 is processed on servers of the following providers, which may be outside Japan. Please see their policies for details.
- Google LLC (Firebase, Google AdMob): Google Privacy Policy, Privacy and Security in Firebase
- OpenAI: OpenAI Privacy Policy
- DeepL SE: DeepL Privacy Policy
- Apple Inc. (App Attest): Apple Privacy Policy
8. Sharing with third parties
Except for the service providers above, we do not share or sell your information to third parties, unless required by law.
9. Deleting your data
- On your device: deleting the App removes everything it stored.
- Phrases and results: our translation server does not store them, so there is nothing for us to delete.
- Analytics data: deleted after the retention period set in Firebase.
10. Minors
If you are a minor, please use the App with the consent of a parent or guardian.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when laws change or features are added. When we do, we will post the updated policy and its revision date on this page.
